What I don't get is why the US and UK forces have to resort to this...for years we've had much more effective and subtle interrogation techniques, most of which are not physical at all.

Physical torture can actually be used against the torturer after awhile...i.e. guilt and such.

On the other hand, mental techniques and so forth are quite harmless in the long run. You get what you want, and there's a happy prisoner in the end.
